Student Use

We have mapped out a curriculum which would allow students at all levels to be exposed to wetland related activities. Activities currently being carried our are:
Middle School: Currently, field trips are made by 5th and 7th grade students once or twice a year and they carry out the following activities in the field or after their return to school:
5th Grade: Simple water chemistry (temperature, turbidity, pH); soil temperature and biomass; simple plant identification
7th Grade: Construction of field guides (including leaf collection) and plant maps of specific areas; use of dichotomous key; examination of water for small and microscopic organisms. Dissection of earthworms and crayfish.

| High school: Students in the Environmental Sciences courses and students doing independent projects have been involved in wetland related activities. |

The Environmental Sciences classes have been learning about wetlands both in class and in the field. They have been carrying out monitoring procedures, and have provided information for this web site.
Students doing independent projects have worked on mapping topography and vegetation using ArcView software, construction of a weather monitoring system, investigation of plant root adaptations to hydric soil, mapping of smartweed growth; comparison of dissolved oxygen levels in areas with and without smartweed, and studies of medicinal and edible plants in the wetland area. Students are participating in making a herbarium of plants found in the wetlands, and in making field guides which will be available to other students and teachers for use in this wetland.
Students are also participating in the Tennessee Amphibian Monitoring Program by identifying and monitoring frogs by their calls at the River Campus. |
