USN Artists Win National Awards
An unprecedented number of USN students received national recognition
for their art work in the Scholastic Arts Competition. After 23
USN students received gold medals in the regional competition,
the winning work was sent to the national competition to be judged.
Only 800 of about 20,000 artists received national awards.
Eight
USN middle and high school students received national gold medals,
one received a silver medal, and one, senior Matt Kastrinsky,
also received the national American Vision award, the highest recognition
in the Scholastic competition, for his sculpture La Destruccion y
la Reconstruccion. Nationally, 67 works received an American Visions
award.
Right after school is out, these young artists will travel
to New York City for the awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall. All the
gold-winning
work will hang in the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
from June 18 until August 8. As an American Vision winner, Matt’s
sculpture will also be displayed in New York City at the Diane von
Furstenburg Studio June 2-4.
