Here is your opportunity to begin your first masterpiece! BRENDA STEIN,
a studio artist who produces gallery and commissioned pieces, will introduce
you to the basics of bowl turning. A member of the Tennessee Association
of Woodturners and the American Association of Woodturners, Brenda enjoys
demonstrating her craft for the Tennessee Association of Crafts Artists
School Outreach Program and Cheekwood's Art in the School Program. In
this class, she will familiarize you with the proper handling of tools,
chucks and the use of rough stock and will also cover the basics of design.

Director of Cultural Affairs in the Mayor's Office of Economic and Community
Development, returns with his popular music-packed introduction to opera.
You will learn about the evolution of opera as both an art form and as
a historical phenomenon, and you'll come away humming opera's hit tunes
and exclaiming "I love you", "I've been stabbed",
and "Oops, I threw my own baby into the bonfire" in five different

how to look at art with a critic's informed eye. Join PEG WILLIAMS, a

of four volumes of poetry and editor of Muriel Rukeyser's selected poems.
Kate currently serves on the creative writing faculty at Vanderbilt University.

Playwright and director JOHN HOLLEMAN will instruct you in the fine art
of writing for the theater. John has written many plays including Fish

will be undertaken to increase awareness of the strategies used to compose

Celebrate the beauty of the Tennessee landscape with photographer JOE
ALLEN who specializes in outdoor portrait and landscape photography in
addition to teaching nature photography at Nashville Tech. A classroom
session will introduce you to the equipment and techniques of nature photography.
This will be followed by a Saturday afternoon field session at mystifying
Burgess Falls near Cookeville. Students should bring their own camera
and equipment to class. Familiarity with basic manual camera operation
is suggested.

begin? Start with this informative workshop taught by BOB SCHATZ, a commercial
photographer for over twenty-three years. Not only has his work been widely
published in national magazines, but it is also in the permanent collections
of the Nashville Public Library, Cheekwood, and the Tennessee State Museum.
Bob will cover the basic use of digital cameras, scanners, Photoshop,
and output to inkjet printers, as well as color management. If available,

Violist KATHRYN PLUMMER and pianist AMY DORFMAN, both professors at the
Blair School of Music and internationally recognized artists, invite you
to a peaceful evening of chamber music as they discuss and perform the
last work of Dimitri Shostakovich, his Sonata for Viola and Piano, Op.
147. The emotional spectrum of this work is immense. In the last movement,
Shostakovich pays homage to Beethovens famous Moonlight Sonata,
excerpts from which Ms. Dorform will perform.
