This weekend is USN’s Admissions Open House.
The school will welcome hundreds of visitors on Saturday and Sunday.

USN’s annual offering of Evening Classes begins in January, and we need your help. Learn how you can volunteer to assist with Registration and Hospitality.

Show Your Tiger Pride!
Celebrate the beginning of USN’s winter sports season by joining the Tiger Club. You’ll benefit all the teams. Read more.

This year a new USN Tiger will be stoking school spirit at basketball games. The old tiger suit is being retired after countless years of sweaty service.

Calling all kindergarten siblings. We’re scheduling kindergarten assessments in December for brothers and sisters of current USN students. Please tell Lynne Mosby in the Admissions Office if you have a child who fits this description (327-3812 or lmosby@usn.org).

Remember to swipe your favorite grocery store key card or gift card as you shop. USN benefits each time families use their Harris Teeter VIC cards, their Publix key cards, or their USN Kroger Gift Cards. The USNA office has extra Publix key cards and Kroger cards—stop by to get one. It’s a simple way to contribute to your school.

Sophomore Sonal Walia is collecting books to send to Belize, where schools have few books. She welcomes donations of books of any kind, even cookbooks and textbooks, for any age group. Books for Belize collection lasts until Tuesday. Email swalia@usn.org

Several USN singers were chosen for the Mid-State Choral Festival
and will perform tonight, November 20, at 6:30. Singing are freshmen Anna Cone, Malak Doss, and Christy Slobogin and Carter Beach, Hannah Burney, Melissa Carlson, John Clayton, Ellen Coble, Emily Fish, Rachel Kaminsky, Charlie Kolarich, and Abby Perlman. Admission to the concert, which is at Christ Church on Old Hickory, is free.

USN’s Quiz Bowl
team won their tournament at TSU this past weekend, despite stiff competition from such local rivals as McGavock and national champion MLK Magnet. The team is Laura Cypress (captain), John Clayton, Mark Arildsen, Joey Capparella, Avi Bregman, Noah Stafford, and a group of promising freshmen: Hannah Baker, Malak Doss, Sam Douglas, Abby Easton, Rebecca Ewing, Theresa Heitz, and TJ Lewis.

USN students loaded 14 barrels of food from the Second Harvest Food Drive. The representative from Second Harvest said, I wish all schools would help us load like you did. USN donated 3,743 pounds of food to Second Harvest.

Ninth graders have just finished replying to the letters from the Japanese students at Kwansei Gakuin High School, with which USN has enjoyed a gift/letter exchange for five years. Students were excited to write about our Presidential election as well as their own sports and hobbies. Taylor Jones (front row, second from left) even found an English translation of a Japanese book his pen pal had sent him.

Part of the USN fifth grade at Little Rocks Central High School last week. With no classes in session, USN students were allowed inside for the first time in many years of Little Rock trips. Each year the fifth grade travels to Little Rock as they end their national award winning Heroes: A Fifth Grade Journey project.

Seventh graders sample different kinds of apples as part of their study of genetics, during which they researched the evolution of the apple into the fruit we eat today. The girls are figuring out which apples have been engineered for tasting, baking, sauces, and juice.

Take a look at the website of the Friends of Warner Parks.
USN’s middle school photography class’ book about the Hill property, the old growth forest which the Friends are raising money to purchase for the Parks, is featured on the front page.

In their study of genetics, 7th Grade Science students created Necklace Babies to help them learn how traits are passed from parents to their offspring. Students will revisit the topic in their Pre-Algebra classes in a couple of weeks and learn about how probability is seen in genetics.

Placing fifth in the Midwestern Sectional Skating competition last week, 8th grader Linde LaChance and her skating partner have qualified to compete in the Jr. Nationals next month in New York.

Learn everything you need to know about Grandparents’ Day.

Bringing their study of the Middle Ages to life, last week Ms. Pitt’s second grade class met Mr. Luffman’s HS Military History class to discuss what they knew about castles, castle defense, and medieval siege weapons. Next the lower school and high school students worked together to create a castle that was impervious to attack and then to develop weapons and a plan of attack to knock it down.  The result was a draw, but learning was victorious.

In art class, kindergarten children have been hard at work constructing the turkey suits they need for Grandparents Day.
