Oscar Duarte, Pepa Samayoa, Isa Alarcon, and Estuardo Villatoro began classes at USN this week as part of the Guatemalan-based Friends and Cultures Exchange Program. The two middle and two high school students will be at USN until December 13. Their host students are Henry Spradley, Reid Dickerson, Sophia Jelsma, and Jimmy Thomas.

At the beginning of school, Lorna Morris’ AP Environmental Science class took a field trip to the Hill property, an old-growth forest near the Warner Parks that the Friends of Warner Park are working to preserve. See a video of their visit, which the Friends are using in their fund-raising efforts.

Austin Boone and Keegen Gillette, chairs of Big Brother/Big Sister tutoring, discuss the interview schedule with Shenall Booker. Interviews will be held for tutors Tuesday, October 28, during E and lunch. This year the USN students will mentor children at Carter Lawrence Elementary School.

Last week 6th graders debated the issue of deforestation in the Brazillian Rainforest. Here, Sam Shaw and Anna Hindman get themselves in character as conservationists (who apparently have significant hippie leanings), just before they take the podium to state their case in Mr. Sharps 2nd period class.



This year Middle School continues its tradition of periodically recognizing students during Town Meeting assembly for random acts of kindness and good citizenship. Read more.




Spanish Club for 5th and 6th graders with Ms. Arcelia Vazquez, USN Lower School Spanish teacher, is beginning. Students of all levels of fluency are encouraged to attend. Read more.





Middle school students in Dr. Chilton’s walking elective now are trying their hands at Geocaching, with teams searching for six caches on Peabody Green last week.

Middle School Tiger of the Week: Eighth grader Abby Motycka fought hard to hold a talented Ensworth team to only 2 goals on October 13 in the first girls’ soccer game of the season. Abby’s efforts had her diving from post to post and jumping to save a shot over the cross bar.



Eighth grader Sara Garmezy led the HS girls
golf team to a 3rd place finish at the TSSAA golf tournament last week in Murfreesboro. Sara placed 6th overall at the tournament.



Malcolm Moutenot and James Douglas led the Tigers to a 4-0 win over Brentwood Academy.
