MTSU Adult Summer Language Institute
In addition to the wide variety of summer camps for K-12 students, the MTSU Adult Summer Language Institute will offer intensive language classes for adults (also open to rising 7th graders and older students). Sponsored by the Center for Accelerated Language Acquisition at MTSU, language offerings include: German, Arabic, Chinese/Mandarin, French, Scottish Gaelic, and Spanish. Grant Eidam, a 6th grader, is asking USN families to donate sleeping bags to send to children in Uganda who sleep in groups in the streets to avoid being forced into the army. He is collecting sleeping bags through April. Read more.

Register Online for Conferences
Information about high school conferences was mailed home last week. We hope you have scheduled an appointment for either Thursday, April 3 or Friday, April 4. Register online through Sunday, March 23.

Goodlettsville Driver Training is offering Driver Education Classes at USN this summer. The course consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of time behind the wheel. You may choose either of two sessions: June 2-5 or July 7-10, 8:00-4:00. The discounted fee for USN students is $350. For a registration form or information, call (615) 430-7556

Michael Landsman ’08 and Sam Fishell ’09 with Mallory Koch, their competitor in the first round of the Duke Moot Court Competition. Against 38 mostly experienced teams from across the U.S., Canada, and South Korea, novices Sam and Michael reached the quarterfinals, arguing before judges on habeas corpus for Guantanamo detainees.

In 8th grade English, students in Dr. McCoy’s class celebrated their 100th journal topic by working in groups and writing their 100 favorite words. Dictionaries were consulted. And the ensuing riot of words included such doozies as methinks, wharf, hobble, waffle, karma, gurgle, polysyndeton, and proboscis. What are some of your favorite words?

At MS Writers’ Night February 28, students read aloud to one another what they wrote that night. English teachers Susan Godwin (5th) and Karen Knox (6th) have sponsored this writers’ group for several years. Though this year’s group includes only USN middle schoolers, for several years students and faculty from other schools participated in the group.
