At University School, the fine and performing arts curriculum recognizes and nurtures the unique "voice" within every child. Students become familiar with instruments, materials, techniques, concepts, and history of the arts in a positive and non-competitive atmosphere that emphasizes appreciation and respect for individuality.

Gallery exhibitions and performances in music and drama become sources of student pride. Art galleries showcase kindergarten through twelfth grade works on a rotating basis. From operettas and concerts to sculpture and photography, the arts program provides many opportunities for self-expression and discovery.

In Lower School, children regularly experience the arts in their classrooms and during weekly visits to the art and music rooms. Their art projects emphasize the exploration of shape, color, and perspective, while the K-4 music curriculum integrates basic theory and music appreciation through experiences in singing, movement, listening, and performance.

Middle School students utilize a variety of media to connect with ideas explored in other disciplines. Through drawing, sculpting, and painting, they discover the value of creative exploration. The High School fine arts are presented in a range of studio and art history classes dessigned to broaden the aesthetic experience for each student, regardless of skill level.

The performing arts program provides a progression of instruction in band, chorus, and drama. Dramatic performances in recent years have ranged from a contemporary Middle School adaptation of Cinderella to an ambitious High School production of Hair. Utilizing multiple opportunities to perform, the Select Choir and Jazz Band regularly display their talents on local and national levels.
