"Empty Bowls" Feed Children
What is Empty Bowls?
The Empty Bowls Project is an international and local program providing
support for hunger organizations while encouraging individuals to become
involved on a personal level. Empty Bowls events raise funds and create
awareness of hunger in our community. Visit www.emptybowls.net for information
about the organization.
How can I participate?
There are two ways to participate at artclectic: by making a bowl
in the Free Tent Event and by purchasing an "Empty Bowl" created
by someone else. On Saturday, October 28th, drop in anytime from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Families are invited to join with children
from the
Nashville community and local artists in a free hands-on interactive
workshop to create a clay bowl or paint and glaze bisqueware. These
vessels become part of a Bowl Bank.
What is the Bowl Bank?
The Bowl Bank is a collection of artisan and novice handmade bowls
created by the public and professional craftspeople at Tennessee
Arts and Crafts
fairs and other events, such as the USN Tent Event, designed to
raise awareness for hunger relief.
How does this feed children and where does the money go?
For a minimum $10 donation, guests select a bowl from the Bowl
Bank and have it filled with ice cream, generously donated by
Ben & Jerry's.
Patrons then take home the bowl as a permanent reminder of their effort
to alleviate hunger in our community. All funds raised for Empty Bowls
will be donated to the Food Security Fund of Middle Tennessee, an outreach
of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee in cooperation with Vanderbilt
Institute for Public Policy "bringing agencies together" initiative.
Local hunger relief organizations such as food banks, community
gardens, and shelters are just a few of the recipients of the
Empty Bowls campaign.
Children Feeding Children
"
Many of our young people believe that hunger exists only in Third World
countries or remote rural areas or among the homeless or unemployed,” says
Susan Eidam, Chairperson of the Empty Bowls initiative for University
School of Nashville. "The fact is that there are 12 million children
and 31 million adults starving in our country. Nearly half of these
people live in households containing a single working mother or an
elderly person.
Empty Bowls works to help feed those who are working to feed their
families," says
Susan. "World Food Day is October 16th, and our University
School students, teachers, and staff will be recognizing what
we can do through
a series of age-appropriate projects for Empty Bowls.”
USN alumnus
Quinn Loggins, son of folk music legend Dave Loggins, will perform
for Middle School and High School students prior to the week
of artclectic in order to heighten students’ and teachers’ awareness
of the project. Loggins has a wonderful website at quinnloggins.com with
music and details about his commitment to the Empty Bowls project,
as
well as a free download of the song he authored for the project, “Empty
Bowls.”
