artclectic History
artclectic provides a unique arts forum for University School of Nashville
and the community by showcasing a diverse selection of quality art.
This weekend show and sale has netted over $315,000
for USN and its programs since its debut as an annual event in 1997,
thanks in great
measure to each year’s dedicated cadre of all-volunteer committee
members and supporters. In addition to its primary fundraising mission,
the show gives rise to valuable arts education opportunities for
USN’s students and the Nashville community, including artist
demonstrations, class show tours, and discussions with the artists
(see “Education Day”)
2002 was a transition year. A group of core artists joined a set
of juried-in artists to present the most successful show in its brief
history. Professional lighting, giant hanging panels, and dramatic
music truly transformed the Tigers’ gym into a world-class art
gallery. artclectic 2005 is the third year as a fully juried show:
A distinguished group of art professionals decided which artists would
be invited to participate.
Over 125 artists submitted samples of their work, and their variety
and their level of accomplishment were extraordinary.
The jurors considered
work on Saturday the 21st of May. The panel consisted of Susan Knowles
and Billy Renkl. Susan Knowles is an independent curator
and art writer who has held curatorial positions at Cheekwood Museum
of Art and the Metro Arts Commission and is Curator for the Nashville
International Airport’s Arts at the Airport program. Knowles
is Tennessee Editor for Art Papers, and produces art features for WPLN
radio. Billy Renkl, a working artist, received his education at Auburn
University and The University of South Carolina. He teaches drawing
and illustration at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.
Our jurors’ real dilemma each year will continue
to be just how to achieve the perfect eclectic mix of art that gives
any particular
show its unique identity. This year, the jury selected 44 artists from
9 states to join 5 USN faculty members for artclectic 2005.
